International Students
Studying International A levels, in the UK or another country?
A-level Biology is a challenging subject. Students need to build a deep understanding of a wide variety of concepts, and understand how to apply this knowledge to different styles of exam question.
Maybe you need a regular tutor to support your learning with additional focus on the exam requirements. Or maybe you would like to arrange continued education over a holiday period.
“Tom is the ideal tutor. Doesn’t rush through anything until he’s sure you’ve understood it. I was sceptical about the online sessions but he’s got everything sorted to make it a smooth session. 10/10 would recommend”
Expert Tuition - Experience Matters
I have 30 years experience of teaching exclusively A-level biology at a top-performing college. Many of my students have received top grades, and my classes have achieved within the top 1% of national A‑level Biology sixth-form college classes for value-added results.
I have been tutoring online since 2015 and have tutored students from some of the most prestigious institutions in the UK, including Eton College and St. Paul’s School, London. I have helped students improve from receiving a D in their first year exams to an A in their final exams, and from a C to an A*.
Tuition For International Students
Support can focus on individual students’ needs while giving an exam-focused approach that builds the skills and knowledge required to get top grades. I offer tailored support for the CIE 9700, IAL and OxfordAQA A-Level Biology specifications.
Online tuition works well, with many students preferring this option over in-person sessions.
Lessons start and finish promptly, all materials are clearly visible, and lessons are recorded to be stored with other learning materials for later use in a password-protected ‘showcase’.
The student is comfortable in their own space, with fewer distractions.
During the tutorials, I explain and annotate notes and slides, discuss relevant exam questions with markschemes, and use a virtual whiteboard to illustrate and build up concepts.
Students are constantly answering exam questions and justifying their answers.
Students also benefit from encouragement to change their approach to learning and to take greater responsibility for their grades.
Students have use the lesson videos for note-taking (avoiding the need to take notes during the lesson itself), and for revision purposes. For some students, the videos formed the core of their pre-exam revision.
“Tom is easy-going and fun, and under pressure, can explain half a term’s worth of topics in an hour. Online tutoring is the future and his use of a drawing tablet makes it seem as though he were a seat away from you. If it wasn’t clear from this ringing endorsement, Tom made a big difference to my results and my Biology, and I hope he has the chance to do the same for many more.”
Recent Students
Eton College, UK
I have taught students from many countries, and many different colleges. Recently students include:
Students from international schools in their home country, studying Pearson IAL, OxfordAQA, or CIE. These students have mostly been in UAE, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and India, with some in the Netherlands. I have taught students from New English School of Kuwait, Cranleigh School (Abu Dhabi), and GEMS UAE.
Students who have travelled to the UK to attend UK boarding schools, studying AQA, Eduqas, or OCR A. These students are frequently from mainland China and Hong Kong. I have taught students from Concord College, Oxford International College, Cardiff Sixth form centre, and Ardingly College.
Domestic students at schools in the UK studying for International A levels, studying CIE. I have taught students from St Pauls, Eton, and North London Collegiate.
Other students studying at international schools outside of their home country - usually Switzerland, often studying IB. I have taught students from Leysin American School, and Aiglon College.
Individual And Group Tuition
If you are seeking tuition for an International specification, please get in touch to discuss your needs. If you will be joining tutorials from outside the UK, we can discuss additional time options to work for your timezone and schedule. This can include sessions on weekends. A timezone calculator is provided at the bottom of this webpage.
Individual Tuition is £180 per 1-hour lesson
One-to-one tuition allows for a deep focus on the individual student’s needs. They can request topics, and receive pre-tutorial materials to work through. They can upload exam questions they found difficult and we discuss how they should have approached them. Each student has their own personal, password-protected repository for lesson videos and learning materials. These resources can be accessed as they choose to recap tutorials and for general revision purposes.
Group tuition uses the same technologies, including use of virtual student whiteboards to ensure interaction and active participation. Individual students can join from any location and are not required to speak in front of the group. Topics are confirmed in advance. All students have access to the lesson recording for revision purposes.
Special Group Tuition for groups of four or more International Students is offered on demand. Timings can be flexible to suit your timezone. If you have a group of four or more students who are interested in this option, please get in touch to discuss.
“The focus the sessions have on understanding biological concepts and how to correctly answer past paper questions has really helped me. Through actively attending the group tutoring sessions my Biology grades are quickly improving from Cs to As. ”
Access Expert Tuition From Anywhere In The World
Online tuition is simple, effective, and allows you to access the best tutors in the world from any location.
Is International A-level Biology an uncommon specification in your region? No problem - you can still access an experienced tutor who teaches hundreds of students every year.
Do you like to travel? This need not disrupt your education. Students have attended my lessons from ski lodges, yachts, and other remote locations.
“My experience with Mr.Tom was absolutely amazing and really positive; Due to the fact, I’m an Arabic student, and sometimes face a language barrier when learning complex scientific concepts in English. However, he has always been incredibly patient, understanding, and supportive throughout every lesson. He takes the time to explain topics slowly and clearly, and he never moves on until he is sure that I fully understand the material. Honestly, his teaching style makes the difficult biology topics much easier to understand. All thanks to his dedication and attention to my individual learning needs, my confidence in biology improved and I went from being a C student to achieving A’s in my mocks.”
